How to waterproof swimming pools?

While most of us dream of having a pool in our homes, we forget about the upkeep and maintenance that comes along with it. One of the biggest factors would be swimming pool water proofing? Yes! It is necessary to have pool waterproofing for several reasons. A waterproof swimming pool in your home will save you unnecessary expenses and hassles in the future. Let’s understand why swimming pool water proofing is important and what product or waterproofing chemical for swimming pool can be used.

Reasons to Waterproof Swimming Pool at Home

  1. Waterproofing in swimming pool helps prevent water damage
  2. The porous nature of the concrete frequently allows water to seep through. Constant exposure to water, as well as chemicals used in pools, may lead the concrete to deteriorate prematurely, resulting in cracking, flaking, and peeling. Adding a waterproof layer to your swimming pool allows the concrete to withstand everyday wear and tear. Using adequate concrete pool waterproofing products also keeps groundwater from seeping through the pool's walls, which may cause internal damage to the concrete and contaminate your water.

  1. Swimming pool water proofing can aid in maintaining the appearance of the pool
  2. Even if your swimming pool is well-built, it will not look good with cracked or pitted concrete. Waterproofing in swimming pool and tank waterproofing will protect and preserve its aesthetic appeal. Some swimming pool waterproofing material options also come in a variety of colours and styles that go well with your outdoor decor.

  1. A waterproof swimming pool has increased longevity
  2. Generally, a swimming pool can function efficiently for 25 years or more if maintained and taken care of regularly. However, there is a possibility that minor issues like peeling paint, cracks, and water saturation can eventually cause it to fail prematurely. This can also result in an expensive replacement or an equally costly removal. Resealing your swimming pool over a period of one to three years, on average, will save you from most maintenance issues and add to the pool’s longevity.

Elements to consider when waterproofing swimming pools

While pool waterproofing, it is essential to remember that the surface in question is usually in contact with two types of water: groundwater and pool water. Since groundwater is aggressive, it must be carefully assessed to determine whether the ground water’s presence is permanent or temporary.  The water inside the pool contains chlorine and other agents that may jeopardise its structural integrity. As a result, the walls of the pools must be thoroughly waterproofed and protected with swimming pool waterproofing products .

Step 2: Cleaning of the substrate

To form a trong bond between your swimming pool waterproofing membrane and the tiles, it is crucial for you to ensure that the substrate is well prepared. Removing contaminants like grease, dust, residues, etc. using cleaning methods like scarifying, pressure washing, shot blasting, sandblasting, and grinding is ideal. Vacuum to remove any dust, use a wet sponge to clean the surface, and let it dry before applying the membrane.

Step 3: Apply the swimming pool waterproofing membrane

Apply the SmartCare Bathroom Waterproofing Membrane using a roller, trowel, or spray over the concrete, which is about 3 days old and cures in just two or three hours. It is a good-quality waterproofing material for swimming pool to keep it in a good condition. All control joints, substrate joints, field seams, and corners should be flashed. All flashing should be done according to the product instructions using a Waterproofing Mesh.

Once the flashing is finished, use a nap roller, v-notch trowel, or airless sprayer to apply the waterproofing membrane to the entire surface.

Note: Apply the first coat and let it dry for 1-2 hours, then apply a second coat at a right angle.

Step 4: Test for leaks

After the membrane is properly cured, you must test to see if the pool is watertight. This is to be done before you begin with the tile installation. After a week, do a flood test, look for leaks, and repair immediately if you find one.
